Caen’s Millennium
In 2025, the city of Caen will celebrate its millennium, marking 1000 years of history since its first written mention in 1025. For this exceptional occasion, a series of cultural and festive events is planned throughout the year, highlighting the rich heritage of the city and its contemporary dynamism.
Program:
- 20th-23rd March 2025: Official inauguration of the Millennium at the Château de Caen, emblematic symbol of the city.
- 21st-28th March 2025: The History Days will offer popular events tracing the great stages of Caen’s history, from the Middle Ages to the present day.
- May 9th, 2025: The Operatic Parade, a spectacular 5-kilometer parade through the city, orchestrated by the local company Le Ballon Vert, will stage artists, circus performers and musicians to evoke the history of Caen.
- June 27th-29th, 2025: The Maritime Weekend will celebrate the link of Caen with the sea, with 48 rigging representing the 48 municipalities of the urban community, maritime parades and various nautical activities.
- September 19th-21st, 2025: The show “Aquanauts” by the Swedish company Cirkus Cirkör will illuminate the Saint-Pierre basin with performances combining circus and synchronized swimming.
- December 2025: A digital art tour in the city will close the festivities, highlighting the heritage of Caen and its recent certification as “Creative City in Digital Arts” by UNESCO in October 2023.
In parallel to these events, an open-air exhibition will be installed during the summer of 2025, presenting nearly 50 creations by international, national and local artists in emblematic places of Caen and the urban community. Caen’s Millenium 2025 promises to be a major celebration, combining tradition and modernity, and offering a unique opportunity to (re) discover the cultural and historical wealth of the city.
